I know that I have been away for quite a while, and that this album came out a while ago, but I plan to be back more often and this is one I feel need be done. (And who says you can post an old album anyway?)
I read mostly that people thought Black Rain was an average work. Nothing too great, just okay. Well I think the album is really great, a fine work and something to be proud of.
What's usually the case is you take what the media and critics say about Ozzy and just bump it up and that's what it really is. They say it's average, I say it's great.
The lyrics are really good, and less people helped him write them so the correlation must be less help, better lyrics. It was only Kevin Chukuro and Zakk Wylde, but from listening to the songs I can tell the only thing Zakk did was add a crazy monster guitar solo or intro to every song. I think Ozzy has really improved, as he sounds pretty good live, great on his album, and his lyrics are bitchin. Good, interesting, clever rhymes (But not doing those really cheesy expected rhymes like he was a poet and didn't know it).
The album ranges from heavy, rolling thunder "Not going away", and "Never gonna stop" and "Trap Door" to softer, more heartfelt ballad like songs like"Lay your world on me" and "I'm here for you". Then there is the complete Zakk Wylde Guitar solo orgasmafest of 11 silver. I think I had a heart attack when I first heard that number.
The songs range, in meaning, from Ozzy stating he's independent, and not going away to fear of the condition of the world by harm from not quite the government, but perhaps big business. Brief mention of the war, not quite blaming the government, but simply stating his confusion on it. Perhaps making a statement about mankind. I noted for the first time since his Black Sabbath days he used a harmonica! How cool!
Some of the songs sound like either messages to his wife, Sharon, or to his fans. Probably for him it' to his wife but it's open to interpretation I suppose, as many things are.
Well, let's hear your opinion on it if you have one. I suppose talk about this album is all we can do in the next six years it will take him to write another, as that seems to be his new pattern to go with his new sound. (1995, 2001, 2007...)
