Yes, food!
You know, I can't believe I didn't think of starting a thread like this before. As involved I am with cooking, it never occurred to me before tonight, to write up a thread about cooking.
I know most of you are of the age where you still live with your parents, and they cook for you and that's just fine. I mean, if I could go eat at my mother's house everyday, I probably would and I'm twenty-five!
IN any case, I started thinking about what everyone's favorite dishes were, and also, if people would be willing to share the recipes to those favorites meals.
I mean, most of us live on opposite sides of the world, some not even in the same Hemisphere, so, we don't really get a chance to connect.
If you think about it, one of the few things that EVERYONE on this planet does is; EAT!
Because of that, we could possibly start becoming connected, if we share a little of our culture through our favorite foods.
So, I'll share a recipe, and whoever feels like they want to talk a little bit about their own and share THAT recipe, can.
That is the only catch though, I do want a bit of a background on why it is you love this dish, and why you picked it over any other. It can be sentimental or simply, "This shit fucking kicks so much ass, I could eat for the rest of my life, and I'd NEVER get tired of it!"
So, because I am well aware that most of you are pretty young, I'll write one up that's pretty simple, that you could possibly do on your own, without much help from your parents.
I don't know if the ingredients can be found EVERYWHERE, but they're pretty basic.
NACHOS!
Yes, I have my own recipe, because I really don't like that gunky stuff people try to pass off as nachos. My kids and well, Hannibal are picky eaters, so I really have to test recipes before I make them part of my repertoire of recipes.
I picked this recipe because I love it, and because I can have it at the table under 20 minutes. (Which is great if you're a busybody like myself!)
Nachos:
Ingredients:
1 Tablespoon of Oil (Preferably olive oil, but vegetable oil works fine)
1 Half cup of Onion (Preferably white or yellow)
1 Can of Beans (Regular size is fine, preferably black beans or pinto beans. Do NOT get the ones in tomato sauce.)
1 Cup of Shredded Cheese (You can pretty much go wherever you like with this, as long as it's the melty kind. I'd go with a mix of sharp cheddar and mozzarella.)
Salt and Pepper to taste.
1 Bag of Tortilla Chips (Whatever brand you prefer)
You will need:
1 oven safe frying pan
LOL, an oven with a broiler.
A potato masher
Instructions:
(You're getting a lesson in making what people call refried beans, but, lol, don't tell anyone that! )
1. At medium heat, warm up the frying and add oil . After slicing the onion in rounds,(this would be well if you did it in advance, before you heated the oil) add them to the frying pan and cook them until they're opaque. (Otherwise known as almost transparent.)
2. Pour all of the contents of the can of beans into the frying pan, adding the salt and pepper after doing so. Let the beans come to a simmer.
3. Turn on your broiler at this time, to make sure it's hot enough to melt the cheese when you put it in.
4. Once the beans come to a quick simmer, start mashing them up with the potato masher. This is also to preference, but traditionally, they get mashed up until you can't see any whole beans. (People, you may actually break a sweat with this!)
5. After you let the mashed beans thicken a little bit. (At medium heat this should take about 2-3 minutes) Take the pan off the heat and add the cheese. (You can add more than a cup, depending on how cheese you like stuff!)
6. Place the frying pan under the broiler (if you don't know how to do this, please, as your parents or someone who knows!) and let the cheese melt. BE CAREFUL not to let it over cook, otherwise it'll be impossible to scoop up with the tortilla chips.
7. The cheese is ready when it's nice and stringy. MAKE SURE TO USE AN OVEN MIT WHEN TAKING THE PAN OUT OF THE OVEN, KIDS!
8. Pour the bag of chips onto a bowl, set the frying pan on the table with something heat resistant underneath and enjoy!
Really, it's that easy.
As I said, I don't know how popular this will be, or if anyone will even try the recipes, but hell, there's nothing else to really share at the moment, so, no harm in trying this!
Lemme know if anyone actually tries this. I wanna see if anyone loves it as much as my family does!
