Figured I'd leave a thread here for the lurkers.
The Star Wars Episode VII trailer is out (has been for a bit now actually):
Feel free to leave you thoughts here, and perhaps a discussion will arise.

No idea what to expect. I mean part of it looks nice, but that little soccer ball droid looked dumb and the light saber seemed excessive. I'll still see it obviously, I'm just hoping for the quality to be somewhere between the original and latest trilogies.

I'll probably see it as well. can't say I'm like "squeeeeee! gotta absolutely see it!" kinda mood, but I'll see it regardless. I'm just curious as to how it'll turn out. XD

I'm super hyped for it, even though I know I shouldn't be.

Saw it. Better than I feared, worse than I hoped.

So who are we thinking the old guy on Jakku was? I'd be inclined to say Wedge. However, since they are cherry picking the extended universe canon, I have a sneaking suspicion it's Corran Horn.
But in the deepest part of myself I like to dream that it's Talon Karrde.
It won't be, but I loved Talon in a way that cannot be expressed by mere text.

No, I pretty much hate that.

Which part? Max Von Sydow, or that he's an original character?

The whole thing. His character, the fact that he wasn't left there for us to figure out. The fact that being a Star Wars Extended Universe fan is not an advantage over the muggles. The fact that I read every Star Wars novel (bar 4-5) up until the point that Episode 1 came out and I spent money and time and lavished love and care on the series, and I have to find things out just as ineffectively as everyone who didn't. I'm a little annoyed that I had written a Star Wars novel by the time I was 16 and then they put out the Prequels. And it broke my heart. And I only got up the strength to give it another try now and they spat in my face.
I'm annoyed that they blatantly spat in the faces of every author, comic writer, artist and fan of the extended series. Fuck you, we're going to take your money, and then we're going to throw shit at you and laugh, and then we're going to fuck you over so you think we've realized it was wrong, and then we're going to fuck you over and spit in your face again, because we think you'll keep giving us money.
Also, damn, I really wanted to be right. *winks*

Wow. I've never seen anyone this upset about watching an original story. I hope you understand why they didn't just adapt any EU storlines for 7,8,9. But...
Technically speaking, so long as an EU story doesn't immediately contradict the films, or the TV shows, It's possible it remains canon in some way. For example, last season of Rebels the Hammerhead class cruiser from Knights of the Old Republic made an appearance:
Making at least that one part of the game, canon. So there's hope still for other EU stories and characters to remain canon.
EDIT: No idea why it eluded me before, but the actor who played Wedge was actually asked to return for Force Awakens, but he declined. So we probably won't be seein' him back on screen anytime soon.

You've never seen anyone mildly annoyed about a studio going a direction they didn't like with a sequel?
Really?
I didn't say I was enraged, furious or even upset. I said I was annoyed. And I am.
And you have to know some people who had at least as much of an emotional investment as mild annoyance? People in my theater screamed.

I just didn't get "mildly annoyed" from your post. Your phrasing seemed, to me, to apply more emotions that just a bit annoyed. That's all.

...Yeah, I suppose that would make most people more than annoyed, all those things. But Star Wars broke my heart almost 20 years ago, it can't really hurt me anymore, it's not as though this mess happened at the height of my love. It's like when someone you grew up with keeps making stupid decisions and winding up in jail, the first couple times you're like "OMG, what!?!?" And then after awhile you're like, "This level of betrayal is exactly what I expected." Even though the relative level of betrayal is much, much higher.
And besides, I have a very high tolerance for pain. I have a very high tolerance for the amount of torture I will put up with and even enjoy in a relationship, otherwise I wouldn't have stayed with Colonel so long, and wouldn't still have a sore, tender, very bruised spot in my heart for him.
You can't be a fan who went from old Star Wars to new Star Wars without being a little bit of a masochist. It just doesn't work.

Are you still trying to convey the emotion of "mild annoyance"? You write about your feelings for the franchise exclusively in past tense, but it sure sounds to me like you still love it, more than you care to admit. You just really dislike what they're doing with it today. And you're absolutely not alone in your dislike, or annoyance, the EU story wipe hurt a lot of fans, some more than others. (But it's getting better. *cough*Thrawn*cough*) Little too much information there, but alright. It's been many a years since someone mentioned the Colonel. I don't think you can love any franchise like Star Wars, without accepting a bit of pain here and there. Nothing's perfect.

I mention the thing about CK, to give you a perspective of the relative level of my tolerance for bad things happening.
There is so much bad stuff going on, that really, companies being greedy is a given. Corporations are greedy, that's what they do. You don't get mad at crocodiles when you put your hand in their mouth and they bite it off. Because, duh, that's obviously what is was going to do, and you're stupid for having offered it something to bite.
*shrugs* So when I live in a world where every time I've watched the news since I moved here, there is a different story about the local cops shooting someone, or I read on my newsfeed about some barista someone knows who was getting stalked at work and the guy showed up at her house and beat her boyfriend, or people trying to float across the Mediterranean and not being allowed to land, or how they cut the fins off sharks and just leave them alive and floating, or how middle African dictators make parents murder their own children with enormous mortal and pestles.
If I had to care about all that, it would be too much. So I don't. Yes, that's awful, but I don't waste my time and energy feeling it.
So yeah, greedy corporations being willingly paid at the expense of something I would prefer was taken care of, that doesn't make much of a blip on my radar.
It raises a little higher out of the baseline of my constant distant rage, mostly because I feel annoyed with myself for having hoped.
I don't really have it in me to expend actual emotion on it. I can use the words matter-of-factly. Because I can a knowledge exactly what it is, but that doesn't mean I feel upset about it. I don't lose any sleep because of Syria or child molestors, or human slavery. What would be the point.
So if I can't bring myself to raise an objection to actual human suffering, you can now have a better idea of why I can call it like it is on Star Wars, and not really be on this side of the screen crying and ranting.
If I can love a man like CK...what am I going to balk at?
