So with the release of the first of three films only a few weeks away and to spark some more conversation here please post any stuff relating to the upcoming films of JRR Tolkien's epic fantasy tale information regarding the books are also welcome but please don't post anything that may spoil the story for viewers who have not read the books at least untill the film has been out a few weeks. A final note you may also discuss your thoughts on Jackson's decision to take expanded material from the appendices of the Lord of the Rings and "Unfinished Tales" and when it's out we can hopefully get some interesting discussions regarding the similarities and differences the movies have to the books but untill then feel free to discuss all things Tolkien and post your thoughts and expectations for the upcoming films thanks

Despite all that is going on with me and life at the moment, I'm actually quite excited to watch the new upcoming film. I remember being in I believe 6th grade when I was first introduced to the books. Hehe, my English teacher was a big fan of Tolkien. So anyways, the first book in the series that I actually read was The Hobbit. so yup, I really wanna see the movie.

Nice if only my English teachers were in to Tolkien having said that I did study the first few chapters in class when I was either 9 or 10 but considering I'm from and live near the area in which Tolkien grew up and got most of his inspiration particularly for the Lord of the Rings so naturally I became a huge fan I actually read the Hobbit after the Lord of the Rings and was surprised how much of an easier read it was particularly when comparing it to his other work like the silmarillion. I think for the most part I'm looking forward to how Jackson is going to tie in the necromancer storyline with the white council as it pretty much sets up the Lord of the Rings. I have to say though I hope Martin Freeman does a good job I mean I think he's a great actor but I have a certain picture of Bilbo from the books that I hope he captures plus out of the protagonists in The Hobbit and LOTR let's face it Bilbo is so much better than Frodo.

I personally can't wait for this film. Jackson revealed that him and the team want to do a trilogy. They're already editing the second one and writing for a third. That's pretty confident, I say. I remember when the first lot of films came out. For 3 or 4 years everyone here (in NZ) was over the moon. Before that the country didn't get much attention on a global scale. I hope the next trilogy will spur the same emotional response from its global audience as well as from local sticky-beaks.
I read the books of LOTR and personally preferred the movies. Am I biased? No, I just thought the books seemed to focus more on describing the journey (they went here and there etc) than painting a picture of the world. I thought you received minimal info on orcs, uruk-hai and they were always the enemy out of sight. Not bad, just different.

I do agree with you Michael on how the books were written and I do love the LOTR trilogy especially how Aragorn is portrayed as in the book he's not overly fussed about claiming the throne of Gondor yet in the movies he has a lot more doubt in himself particularly as his fate is bound to the ring by Isildur and he is reluctant to become King although I've always enjoyed both reading and watching the black riders hunt for the ring in the fellowship because of the sense of terror they create if only more had been created around each one other than just focusing on the Witch King of Angmar and a mention of Khamul the lieutenant of Dol Guldur who is rumoured to have an appearance in this upcoming trilogy and I do plan a trip to New Zealand myself I'm particular interested in visiting the film location for the Misty Mountains and I want to climb Mounts Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu which doubled for Orodruin.

Exactly! But I guess they can't make the films too problematic, I mean they're already 3 hours That's cool that you want to check out the mountains. I heard from friends that the Tongariro Crossing is amazing (That's the third mountain, which is in line with Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu respectively). If you like skiing come in winter, you can ski on Ruapehu after you climb it But Summer is so great too. If you visit you might as well visit the entire country coz it's very small and you can see everything, not just the mountains

Skiing down Mount Ruapehu wow i've got no excuse to visit now I have to say the scenic shots in the trilogy are amazing as up until those films the only thing I knew of in regards to New Zealand were the All Blacks due to my love of rugby (very glad they got the last world cup) but one of my favourite scenes in ROTK was the lighting of the beacons.
