Really some one help me please, I'm totally freaked out by this. Here is the thing... I was using my laptop last night, all was fine, working perfectly like it always does. so after I was done with what I was doing I turned it off for the night. Anyways, I woke up this morning got my laptop and went to read my email at the kitchen while eating breakfast. well, I pressed the power button and the led lights went on like normal but there is no display or boot up. so there I was sitting in the kitchen waiting like an idiot for the system to boot but nothing happened. the screen is just black. I have no idea what could be wrong. all I know is that it does have power, the led lights come on, the fans start to run, but I have a black screen. I have a HP Pavilion dv2120us so if you know anything please let me know. That laptop has my entire life in it. I tried the HP Tech support website but I couldn't find any articles with my machine's symptoms. please, please, please give an old pal a hand here. I'll love you forever and ever.

My experience comes from having the deadest computer on the planet, I couldn't tell you the amount of times I've begged and threatened my own computer to work.
Anyway, just how far does it boot up? I mean, do you see the company logo flash-up first and then it blanks out, or does nothing at all ever happen. If you have the chance, you need to get into safe-mode and do a system restore. Do a few hard shutdowns and reboots, if nothing changes, can't help you. I mean, if you were screwing with BIOS and downloading goat porn, the problem is rather self-evident. Otherwise, no, can't help you.
Or you can try the age-old method of rapid repair and slap it.

It doesn't boot up at all... just the led lights that indicate its getting its power turn on, but other than that, nothing comes on. not even the company logo or "windows is starting up" or anything. I don't really like to mess with the BIOS so it can't be that. And neither do I download dangerous material on that one. I have no idea what could have really happened. But I do doubt that its a software issue.
Stupid Circuit City had to close before my extended warranty and repair plan that I had purchased with them expired. I feel cheated... T_T
oh well, thanks for your help anyways... I'll probably just spend my whole paycheck and send it to get repaired.

Coincidentally, I just had the same problem myself a few days ago, except it was my PC and not a labtop. The problem with me was that the graphics card was seriously overheated, so the computer just went to safe mode and wouldn't come out. The solution for me was to simply wait a while until it cooled down, reset the power a few times like Orthrus recommended, unplug and clean out the monitor socket, and then spend less time online so it wouldn't overheat again.
For a labtop, I suppose you could check out if the video card is properly installed, make sure it's still working, and then re-plug it. The problem definitely sounds like its hardware based, so I wouldn't bother with any virus scans or system checks. Other than that, I can only recommend what I tried, and as a final resort, just take it to a repair shop.

Wow! thanks, I'll give that a try. though I would have to study the composition of a laptop a bit more, for I've never opened up a laptop before. Desktops? no problem but laptops are a bit different. no matter. I gotta try. ^_^
