I know there's a good bunch of AC fans here, so here's a thread for all of you.
AC IV (4) has been announced, It'll be coming out for the PS3, 4, 360, Wii U and PC.
The full title is Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. It will be releasing in October 2013.
The plot, from Wikipedia: "As is the case in previous games in the Assassin's Creed series, the story is divided into two intertwined halves, with one in the present day, one in a historical setting, and the events of each influencing the other. In the present day, the player character is hired by Abstergo Entertainment — a subsidiary of Abstergo Industries — to use the Animus and examine the memories of Desmond Miles and his ancestors. Although it had previously been established that the Animus may only be used to view the memories of one's direct ancestors, the ending of Assassin's Creed III implies that Desmond's genetic memories have now been uploaded on to 'the cloud'. Faced with this new possibility, Abstergo has requested that the player concentrate specifically on the memories of the Assassin Edward Kenway, a notorious pirate and privateer operating during the Golden Age of Piracy. Kenway's story is set in the Caribbean, and mixes open-ended ship-based exploration with combat and land-based adventures on a number of Caribbean islands."
Things I'm looking forward to -
More naval gameplay, including free roam. This was actually promised to be in AC III but it wasn't, which is just such a downer for me.
And the refined and polished gameplay that I've always enjoyed in the series.
Things I'm not looking forward to -
Everything else.
First off, I don't get why suddenly the series goes from 3 to 4 in a single game. With all the other releases there's at least 2 additional games to tell more stories, and get you more invested in the characters. Altaïr and Ezio both had several additional games in between the main game releases, but Connor only has one, and he's not even in it. I feel like this is just a huge waste of effort, why the hell just jump from one protagonist to another in such relatively short time? It's out of character for the series, and makes AC III worth less character wise.
Secondly, the story. I was under the impression that the ending to III, despite how lame it was, concluded the story, yet in 4 we jump right back into Desmond's ancestors, and apparently is on Abstergo's side. I don't exactly get why we'd be playing as the obvious bad guys now.
I figure the modern storyline takes place after AC III's ending, but the Pirate era takes place, surprise, before the revolution. At this point i don't see why this direction was taken, instead of moving the stories and eras forward, like the other games in the series.
Third, this represents a problem in the gaming industry; why the fuck won't the developers just let some stories fucking end?
It sort of bothers me that some stories just have to keep going, and i know most of them are actually very good games, Halo 4 for example, but it's just tiring to see the same franchises constantly spewing out new versions of the same thing.
This comic sums up my feelings more neatly;
