This is an evalution of the Salad Finger Character. This was proffesionaly done and not some little kid thing that you could read in two minutes. I suggest reading it, its really really interesting. Though to better understand the evaluations, you may want to watch all 6 episodes. But it pretty well explaines the key points to understanding this, newly realized, DEEP character. I really wish, after better understanding Salad Fingers, that they would make a full length motion picture about his struggles with himself. Enjoy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction
The fictional flash cartoon character Salad Fingers is presented as a cannibal, suffering from multiple personality disorder, existing as three separate entities, and living in the fabricated reality of the innocent alter ego. The three entities consist of the innocent extreme Salad Fingers which the viewer sees, the malicious extreme Hubert Cumberdale who acts behind the scenes, and finally Jeremy Fisher, the main entity who created the two extremes. If we regard the character as a victim of multiple personality disorder, it makes sense to assume that the two extremes were created out of internal conflict residing in Jeremy. As we see in the episodes, Jeremy desires a life of blissful ignorance and helps Salad Fingers to gain control over the whole and to defeat, in a sense, the evil extreme that desires the same thing.
The object of control for Salad Fingers is his spoon. The spoon is metaphorical, and when he loses it to the bird as seen in Episode 5, his reality starts to fall apart. He is no longer in control of his interactions or the master of his little universe, and it terrifies him. Even with the spoon however, Salad Fingers does not have complete autonomy over the whole. Every so often Hubert surfaces to kill someone, or presents himself in Salad Fingers' reality just to let him know he exists.
It is also important to note that Salad Fingers lives in our world, but sees reality as he wants to see it. If he were living completely inside his head, having multiple personality disorder should have no effect on other characters' speech. The people are real, but Salad Fingers does have flashbacks and hallucinations that have nothing to do with reality. Some of these flashbacks like the one in Episode 4 are from traumatic events in the character's past, which may or may not have had influence in his development of a psychological condition.
The author David Firth describes why he chose the name Salad Fingers: "One day I was playing guitar and for some reason (co writer) Crust told me I have Salad Fingers. Later his name on MSN was 'Salad Fingré,' 'Fingré' being our term for sticking two fingers up at people (very similar to the American middle finger). We were discussing Flash cartoon making and he said I should make a film about a man who likes to touch rusty spoons (he wasn't really serious) but I made it anyway." [edit]
Episode 1 - Spoons
Salad Fingers is introduced and we can clearly see that he is disturbed from his odd interests as well as from his speech. No one makes sense to Salad Fingers because he suffers from multiple personality disorder, but he finds this comforting because he’s safe in his own little world. He mentions that he loves rust, and is trying to find the perfect spoon. “Rust” is suggested to symbolize blood, but the innocent and naive alter ego Salad Fingers doesn't know this. Hubert is aware of the blood/rust connection and is also the cause of the rust. He kills behind the scenes when he temporarily gains control over the whole, and Salad Fingers is none the wiser when he resurfaces.
The spoon, as mentioned before, is his control over reality. He is searching for the "perfect spoon", or stability in this reality that at any time could collapse and get taken over by Hubert. He enters a child’s house, and immediately there is an impression of dread. The picture on the wall changes from that of a normal man with crossed out eyes and a peaceful disposition to a guy who is screaming and bloodied which you can see by zooming in. This is another instance where the personality of Hubert temporarily gains control over Salad Fingers and his perception of the environment.
It is a jump to assume that the child was killed during the switch, but later episodes add credence to this assumption, like they do for many other statements made in the beginning of this analysis. He proceeds to ask the child for a spoon, but what he’s really doing is asking another person for stability because he is not able to find it within himself. [edit]
Episode 2 - Friends
Looking at the stitches and bites taken out of the three puppets, we might get the feeling that these puppets are people that Salad Fingers has killed, and is now interacting with them completely under his control. However, if we consider that Hubert is a part of the whole, it wouldn't make sense to assume that the Hubert puppet was someone he had killed. Instead, the Hubert puppet may be Salad Fingers' way of safely interacting with his evil extreme. As we see in later episodes, the appearance of the Hubert puppet also signals an impending struggle for control, as will shortly be the case.
The female character is someone that Jeremy once knew, but might have killed at some point and possibly ate her after cooking her in the oven. Evidence, although sparse, comes from the fact that Salad Fingers says Marjory Stewart-Baxter tastes like sunshine dust. The word "oven" in the subtitles is even shaped like a sun, suggesting a similarity between the oven and Baxter. Even the look of the puppets with their eyes taken out, ‘rust stains’, and stitched up scars point to death. Salad Fingers mentions Hubert Cumberdale tastes like "soot and poo” which is an example of self-loathing. Salad Fingers is dissatisfied with the evil counterpart and disagrees with his action, which is further symbolized by the tears coming from Salad Fingers' eyes as he describes the taste. It's also interesting that the child who is trapped in the oven wears a pink jacket with the letter "m" on it, and is cooked.
After Salad Fingers slips into unconsciousness from touching the hook, he meets his alter ego Hubert in the meat locker. It is here that he switches personalities, and behind the scenes Hubert cooks M Jacket (the child in the pink coat) while Salad Fingers sits in the background totally blind to what is going on around him. He erases the kid from his mind and makes himself think he is actually a fish. Later on in Episode 3 we see a grave, which means that Salad Fingers must know a little about what has taken place and therefore feels bad about what he has done.
What is interesting to note here is that Salad Fingers is actually missing one of his hands for a brief moment when M Jacket is going into the oven and Salad Fingers is standing next to it looking at the hook on the wall. His hand is missing, and we hear the oven door close. The only conclusion one can draw from this scene is that Hubert Cumberdale is closing the oven door behind the scenes. Salad Fingers' missing hand represents the act of Hubert cooking the child and doing so without the knowledge of innocent Salad Fingers. Furthermore, the high-pitched scream that Hubert emits in the meat locker is really that of the child.
Other notable things include the fact that, after cutting his finger on the hook, Salad Fingers "likes it when the red water comes out," symbolizing his brief transition into the sadistic Hubert. After waking up from the dream, the Hubert and Marjory puppets are lying on the floor, but the Jeremy Fisher puppet is nowhere to be found. This is either because Jeremy Fisher is now inside Salad Fingers, having thrown away the bad thoughts about Hubert and Marjory, or simply that he is momentarily weakened and has therefore fled. [edit]
Episode 3 - Nettles
Salad Fingers is wandering around an area that contains a few scattered things called "nettles" in an otherwise dead landscape. The word "nettle" by definition means "to gnaw into," "to irritate," or as a noun: "an irritating, unpleasant object." There is also a baby carriage, which may mean the nettle is really a baby. Salad Fingers nurses it, puts it in a carriage, talks to it like someone would to a baby, and a baby is also something that is irritating like a nettle.
The BBQ man, or Milford Cubicle ("Harry" is the name on his name tag), is your average worker, hence the name "cubicle," and he is chasing after his baby that Salad Fingers has abducted. Instead of dying from hitting his head against the door, it is more likely that Salad Fingers killed him as Hubert Cumberdale to prevent interference from whatever Salad Fingers was planning to do to the baby. What is also interesting is that Salad Fingers is shown to have a scar on his belly, vertical like a C-section, as he is nursing the baby. The nipple is even red as if a baby were really nursing. This could imply that Salad Fingers has lost his/her child in the past (i.e.; "makes me think of happier times.") [edit]
Episode 4 - Cage
This is where the stability of Salad’s reality starts to get really compromised. Before this, Salad’s reality was more or less under his control. The theme of this episode is the memory of past traumatic events and the reluctance to accept a traumatic experience as reality. Salad Fingers mentions that he wants to go to France. He wants to pretend, to live blissfully in his own reality, however the child, an illusion, prevents him from partaking in this enjoyable mental experience. The thought that he may have to confront his past terrifies him, but he knows that it may be inevitable in the near future, so he puts his "trip to France" on hold for a while.
The child is now representing an abductor as Salad Fingers gets led through the woods by a tap on a string. The tap could have been a lollipop or some other fun object that a kidnapper used to lure the young boy to the woods where he could abduct him. It should also be mentioned that the tap has also been said to represent Salad’s desire to get clean, and could also represent a phallic symbol (which would also fit into the theory that the rubbing of the bars may symbolize masturbation).
Salad Fingers gets "trapped" by the abductor and is held prisoner. What happens to Salad Fingers as a kid under the abductor's control is not known, though it was likely a form of sexual abuse judging by his intense stroking of the cage bars. However, as Salad Fingers gets scared from reliving this experience, he magically "vanishes" from the stressful situation. This proves that he is still ultimately in control of his reality, but having to live through part of his traumatic experience signifies that this control may be diminishing. All that is left now is the kid, who is alone and crying, which might now represent Hubert as a lonely and scared little boy after his abduction.
The "bordois" which Salad Fingers calls "sister" could be taken in the literal sense. He mentions that she is dirty and flat. It's sick to think about it but perhaps her corpse is rotting and is not fun to play with anymore. "Flat" is also a psychological term to describe schizophrenics who lose their emotions. They just "go flat" like his sister who is no longer appealing to Salad Fingers. The "bordois," as the bars of the cage and the taps, may be another phallic symbol. Salad Fingers states that he wishes to stroke her body, after which he claims that she is flat and gooey and refuses to play with her. The Freudian analysis would be inclined to believe that Salad Fingers is a sexual deviant, possible having raped and murdered his sister. A cumulation of the guilt felt in the early episodes to the actions of his evil outer ego would lead to the dreamy encounter of the sixth episode where Salad Fingers attempts to deal with the past.
Alternatively, one could assume that it was actually Salad Fingers himself who was the abductor. Expanding on the "bordois" sexual deviant theory, Salad Fingers (as Hubert, perhaps) may have been consumed by sexual desire. Because he says he "wants to marry all you gorgeous taps," the tap may actually represent the boy. Hubert may have followed the boy into the woods and seduced him, accidentally trapping himself in the boy's amorous grasp (symbolized by the bear trap). This is shown by the boy presenting a ring to Salad Fingers. Salad Fingers' reaction of fleeing may mean that the result of this was Hubert/Jeremy fearing the consequences of this relationship. However, if Hubert did continue his relationship with the boy, Salad Fingers may, as said above, have been afraid to face the past. [edit]
Episode 5 - Picnic
Stability continues to diminish in this episode. Salad Fingers stammers in the beginning with names, and Hubert Cumberdale is now Barbara Logan Price. What's interesting to note here is the disconnected telephone and the phrase Salad Fingers utters immediately afterwards. The phone is disconnected, therefore the conversation involves Salad Fingers and Salad Fingers alone. Could Hubert be trying to surface again?
It's also interesting to note that the facial expression of Salad Fingers drastically changes into a more serious and possibly demented look when he says to himself aloud "stop scratching your basket belly". He looks possessed as he's saying it too, as though someone like Hubert was trying to come through. Evidence for this is with Hubert's timely appearance. Salad Fingers looks noticeably distraught when Hubert appears, gives a new name to someone he already knows in order to mentally repress him, and offers him a 'friend hat' when this fails that seems more like a peace offering than anything else. It's just a feeble attempt to placate evil Hubert through kindness.
We see the grave again, and the girl arrives. Soon, a crow or raven shows up, foreshadowing that a bad occurance is imminent (amplified by the fact that it's resting on a grave). The phrase “There’ll be fog on the shore tonight Boson” also signifies danger, fog on the shore being dangerous to a ship coming in to port. When Salad fingers says that the guests will be arriving soon the Hubert puppet nods which suggests that the evil side is eagerly awaiting their arrival, probably because of some evil pleasure Hubert will get from it.
During the Picnic as Salad Fingers talks to Mable and suggests she becomes his new playmate the camera focuses on the Marjory Stewart Baxter puppet in the window which remains still as he talks about Mabel's dress. It could be that Marjory Stewart Baxter was a previous victim and the appearance of the figure represents a memory in the back of his mind.
As Salad Fingers is playing picnic, he is trying to resist his evil side by taking out his Spoon for control. However, when the raven takes his spoon it takes Salad’s control along with it. The girl talks coherently, momentarily breaking through into his world and it completely terrifies Salad Fingers as for the first time he gets a glimpse into the horrific reality of his life and what he is about to do to the girl. She also calls him a 'Naughty Man' which indicates sexual deviance.
It's also been suggested that Mable could in fact be the daughter of Salad Fingers and the picnic is just a memory of a good experience they had together before she died. This parallels the scene in Episode 3 where Salad Fingers mothers the nettle in an effort to reclaim parenthood. Salad Fingers mentions having a daughter as well. As of episode 6, she has never been seen, or at least has never been identified as such, one could speculate that this daughter may not exist at all and is imagined by Salad Fingers.
However, because Mable only has one appearance and a short one at that, one can't be sure that this is the case. She is obviously dead from the look of her body as she says to Salad Fingers "Don't you like my mouth words?", so it's possible that she has no familial relationship to Salad Fingers and is just someone he knew and killed, or knew and watched being killed, etc. She refers Salad Fingers as 'Mr. Fingers' which further discredits the daughter link.
The disconnected phone and the random symbols and letters in place of numbers on the phone are further evidence that Salad Fingers suffers from multiple personality disorder. [edit]
Episode 6 - Present
This episode is basically an all-out war between the three entities. Hubert Cumberdale wants control (and might get it at the end), and Jeremy Fisher tries to keep Salad Fingers in control by coming through into his reality. First though, the 'sticky river' in the beginning scene needs to be explained.
Salad Fingers spots Hubert Cumberdale on top of the dresser, either in observation or ready to attack. He realizes what Hubert is there to do, and tries to convince himself that he doesn’t exist and has no effect on him. He turns him into something less scary (a sticky river) and has the ability to harm him.
Jeremy Fisher, knowing that Salad Fingers is in danger, crosses into his world again and appears as a puppet. He’s supposed to be fighting the Great War against Hubert, but instead gives him a toy horse. A subtle switch of personalities occurs here directly after Salad Fingers 'consumes' Jeremy Fisher, getting him out of his mind. He must have sensed Hubert coming who immediately asks where Jeremy’s gotten off to. The horse may be Jeremy himself hiding from Hubert in a different form, there to guide naïve Salad Fingers away from Hubert and to keep him out of trouble. After all, it is the horse that guides Salad Fingers away from the toilet.
The toilet represents a holding place for Salad’s bad memories which he subsequently represses, evidenced when Salad Fingers says that it is time to "flush those bad thoughts away". More importantly, it also represents a portal into the mind of Hubert, where the bad memories and truth are stored. Once he starts to look into the pool, he gets scared and immediately flushes the bad thoughts down into further obscurity. It's notable that during this scene a beetle is crawling up a rusty pipe, which in Firth's Spoilsbury Toast Boy series is a symbol of totalitarianism and control. This further cements Hubert's connection with the toilet.
When Salad Fingers gets inside his house, he finds Hubert sitting down on a chair, posing the same question to Jeremy, (who is now out of horse form) that Salad Fingers asks about the Great War. This suggests that Jeremy Fisher has been helping Salad Fingers to keep his dominance and control in the mind of Jeremy Fisher. Jeremy really wants to be innocent, and have nothing to do with the evil entity. However, Hubert has discovered this entity despite Salad Finger’s best efforts and begins to consume him, although it’s not known whether Jeremy fled Salad Finger’s world and left him to be consumed by Hubert, or if that actually is Jeremy being eaten.
